YHFG marks Menstrual Hygiene Day 2019 with hundreds of girls benefiting free sanitary pads

The Youth Harvest Foundation Ghana marked the 2019 Menstrual Hygiene Day at the Yagzore and Sekoti communities in the UER with a call for increased action and investment to ensure that women and girls are no longer limited because of their periods. The events were made possible through various cash and kind donations by the staff of YHFG and other philanthropists. The donations were used to procure several boxes of sanitary pads for girls from resource-poor backgrounds who have limited access to the basic material needed for menstrual management.
Addressing the gathering in the two communities, the YHFG Ag. Executive Director, Priscilla Nyaaba, said it is high time to break the silence on issues of menstruation in Ghana. He said the YHFG was working with other women-led NGOs to establish a Coalition for Menstrual Health Management in the region to provide a platform for girls to share their experiences and coordinate efforts to address menstrual health management issues in northern Ghana in general. The broad smiles on the faces of young boys and girls of Yagzore and Sekoti communities brought fulfillment to the team of YHFG staff and nurses at the Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration. The interaction enabled the youth to appreciate the need for good hygiene practices and to do away with myths/misconceptions of menstruation. The YHFG is grateful to the YHFG and other individuals for the donations.

About Ghana

Situated in Western Africa, Ghana is bordered by Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Togo. The country approximates the size of Great Britain with a population of 25 million inhabitants. The YHFG is located in northern Ghana, where 90 percent of the population are peasant farmers. The overall levels of educational attainment are much lower in the region, compared with the country as whole. Northern Ghana is a patriarchal society where women are traditionally excluded in decision making. Early marriages and early motherhood curtails girls and women educational and employment opportunities.
