In response to the high demand by young girls for support to escape forced and child marriages, the YHFG initiated the girls’ remedial school (GRS) project in 2013 at its new youth center in Yikene in Bolgatanga. In the GRS, girls who have failed core subjects in their final year senior high school examinations are given the opportunity to re-write the exams and progress on their career prospects.
Through the support of JugendPartnerschaft Ghana e.V., the Rotary Club Heidelberg and ZetVisions, Heidelberg, the YHFG provided a local housing accommodation facility at the new youth center. The girls are housed in the local house during the remedial school to keep them away from their families and away from all pressures to marry. At the youth center, they have access to electricity and facilities for night studies as well. They also received remedial support from volunteer teachers who prepare them both mentally and psychologically for the October examinations.
The remedial school has graduated three batches of students in the past years, helping over 100 girls to progress in their education. The current cohort of 50 students started in April 2017 and will leave the youth center in November 2017, after completing the examinations.
